Malaysia exports activated carbon to markets such as Japan (31%), Italy (15%) and the United Kingdom (11%) (Roskill, 2003). From the large number of small activated carbon producers in Malaysia, a total production of about 20 000t yr1 has been reported. The demand for activated carbon is forecast to rise by 3%-5% per year in industrialized countries, with the growth in Asian countries projected at 10% per year. There are numerous applications for activated carbon.
