The country has been one of the largest producers and exporters of palm oil products in the world. Malaysia is also one of the main producers and exporters of palm kernel products, especially of palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake (PKC). PKC is an important by-product of palm kernel oil extraction. It has long been utilized either as an ingredient in animal compound feeds, or as a straight animal feed, particularly for ruminants.</p>

One of the essential requirements to develop a candle making company in this growing market is to expand the product range on offer. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sorghum originated from Ethopia and Sudan. It was introduced into Malaysia in 1969, and has been cultivated at the Agriculture Station, Sungai Udang, Melaka, during the paddy off-season. Sorghum belongs to the family Graminineae, similar to wheat, rice and maize. It can reach up to 4 m in height and grow well in warm climate with temperatures raging from 26C to 37C. Sorghum can be cultivated at 1200 m above sea level, and can tolerate high temperature, drought conditions and withstand water-logging for short periods.</p>

From the large number of small activated carbon producers in Malaysia, a total production of about 20 000t yr1 has been reported. The demand for activated carbon is forecast to rise by 3%-5% per year in industrialized countries, with the growth in Asian countries projected at 10% per year. There are numerous applications for activated carbon.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The conventional palm oill mills produce crude palm oil (CPO), palm kernels and other oil palm biomass such as empty fruit bunches (EFB), fibre, shells and palm oil mill effluent (POME. Biomass such as EFB is used as mulch in the plantation to retain and recycle soil nutrients. In addition, all palm oil mills in Malaysia use fibre and shells as boiler fuel to produce steam for their processing needs and for electricity generation. However, a large amount of liquid biomass in the form of POME is also generated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Palm oil mill effluent (POME) generated by the milling process has a high soluble organic content, and biochemical oxygen demand/chemicaloxygen demand (BOD/COD) &gt;0.45. This is indicative that it is a good source material for biological performance, especially in a tropical climate such as in Malaysia, thus making anaerobic digestion the most economical and most applicable technology to treat POME. POME in the current open ponding system generates a huge amount of biogas which contain methane that has a global warming potential 21 times that of carbon dioxide. Hence, if biogas is harnessed, the emission of greenhouse gases can be potentially mitigated and the palm oil industry will be more sustainable.</p>
