The growing demand for bio-based raw materials in particular surfactant, is expected to boost the demand for methyl ester sulphonates (MES), a renewable, palm oil derived surfactant, eco-friendly and better performance and available locally. MES offers several advantages such as high detergency in hard water conditions, readily biodegradable nature and low toxicity, which give MES an advantage over their traditional rival surfactant.

In these systems, hydraulic oil functions as a power transmission medium, enabling the movement, control, and operation of various components. According to a market report, the global hydraulic oil market volume was estimated at 1.76 million tonnes in 2025 and is expected to reach 2.18 million tonnes by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 4.37% during the forecast period (2025-2030) (Mordor Intelligence, 2024). In terms of market size, another market study reported that the global hydraulic oils market was valued at USD8.7 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD10.2 billion by 2029, growing at 3.2% CAGR from 2024 to 2029 (MarketsandMarkets, 2024). The key drivers of growth in the hydraulic fluids market are the rising demand for hygienically processed food, the rising need for hydraulic fluids from construction, mining, agricultural and marine sectors, and the growing adoption of automation in industries.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) production in Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia, is threatened by a pathogenic fungi, Ganoderma boninense. Infected oil palm debris left to rot in plantations is an important source of inoculum for the pathogen. Root contact with unattended infected debris is known to be the primary source of infection that spreads in the soil. In general, numerous methods have been utilised for the management of basal stem rot (BSR) disease in oil palm plantations, including cultural techniques, mechanical, chemical and biological controls, but with little success (Idris, 2011). The oil palm biomass provides a substrate for the breeding of pest such as rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) and serves as a source of Ganoderma sp. inoculum, to initiate basal stem rot infection. An alternative approach has been adopted by utilising wood degrading fungi to accelerate biomass degradation and minimise the inoculum of Ganoderma during replanting of oil palm.

Next-generation sequencing technologies have resulted in the identification of a large number of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in the genome. In comparison to other marker systems such as amplified fragment length polymorphisms and simple sequence repeats, SNP markers are amenable to automation, high-throughput, and cost-effective genotyping (Saxena et al., 2018). SNP markers are commonly used for genetic improvement through various studies such as construction of genetic map (Ting et al., 2023), elucidation of marker-trait associations, genome- wide association studies and genomic selection (Serdari et al., 2024; Kwong et al., 2017). SNP genotyping was performed using either fixed- arrays or genotyping-by-sequencing platforms. In the oil palm industry, most of the biotechnology research is currently using sequencing-based DNA markers for genomics-guided breeding. Utilisation of sequencing-based DNA markers require additional bioinformatics analysis and the cost per data point is higher compared to array-based with optimised SNP panel. Moreover, genotype calls of sequencing are not consistent across different experiments.
