Industrial cleaning chemicals are specialised chemicals used to clean and preserve many types of industrial equipment and facilities. They are intended to remove tenacious filth, grime, oil, and other contaminants from machinery, floors, walls, and other industrial surfaces. Industrial cleaning chemicals come in a variety of types, including detergents, degreasers, solvents, and acids. They are designed to meet specific cleaning needs, such as removing tough stains, disinfecting surfaces, and protecting equipment from corrosion and damage. Industrial cleaners contain various chemicals that can have different toxicity levels that are harmful to humans and the environment and pose a challenge due to strict environmental regulations. Palm-based industrial liquid cleaners with clay is a potential replacement for hazardous industrial cleaning chemicals(Figure 1).

Transformers are vital components of electrical power systems and the choice of insulating and cooling oil can have a significant impact on their performance, safety and environmental footprint. Palm-based transformer oil (Figure 1), a biodegradable dielectric fluid, has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional mineral oil for several compelling reasons. Firstly, palm-based transformer oil offers superior fire safety, with a flash point over 280°C and a fire point exceeding 300°C, significantly higher than that of mineral oil (Mohd et al., 2021). This enhanced fire safety, reduces the risk of transformer fires, contributing to a safer electrical infrastructure. In addition, palm-based transformer oil exhibits excellent moisture tolerance and is readily biodegradable, making it an environmentally friendly option. Its high moisture tolerance ensures better performance and longevity. Furthermore, this oil can extend the lifespan of the insulating paper in transformers, enhancing reliability and reducing maintenance costs.

The outbreak of the bagworm population increases and becomes serious without proper control measures.

The use of traditional petroleum based grease raises environmental and food safety concerns. On the other hand, there is a scarcity of local grease manufacturers in Malaysia, highlighting the necessity to transfer grease processing technology and reduce dependence on imported greases. According to a market study(Markets and Markets, 2022), the global grease market is growing at a 2.9% CAGR and is expected to reach USD6.1 billion by 2025. About 90% of grease consumption is accounted for by mineral greases, while the remainder (130 kT) is for bio based grease (Panchal et al., 2015; Sharma and Phadke, 2014). Based on a recent report (MordorIntelligence, 2023), the overall grease consumption in Malaysia is at least 15 kT, of which about 1.5 kT is bio-based grease. The overall grease consumption of the Malaysian palm oil industry is estimated tobe about 2 kT, considering the size of the industry relative to other industries.

Poor fruit set has been reported at specific sites by some oil palm plantations and is a growing concern, especially in peat areas. The malformed and parthenocarpic fruits, if severe, could eventually affect productivity especially oil yield.Insufficient pollen source due to the low numbers of male inflorescence (MI) and scant breeding sites for the pollinating insects leads to poor fruit set, resulting in lower fresh fruit bunch (FFB) and oil yield (Norman et al., 2018). Insufficient supply of viable pollens affects the pollination efficiency of Elaiedobius kamerunicus, the oil palm’s natural pollinator. Planting highly productive DxP and clonal palms at high density in such areas further aggravates the situation. As a consequence, high number of parthenocarpic fruitlets and malformed bunches are observed in some cases (Harun and Noor, 2002), eventually affecting oil yield.
