The 3-monochloro-1,2-propanediolesters (3-MCPDE) are chemical food contaminants that are carcinogenic. The 3-MCPDE is formed due to high deodorisation temperature at there fining stage of crude palm oil (CPO). The primary precursor for 3-MCPDE formation is chloride which is present in the plantation and mill where it gets into the palm oil. Sources of chloride are water, fertilisers, pesticides, and soil (Arris et al.,2020). Many studies show dependency between3-MCPDE and total chloride content (TCC) in palm oil. A validated method for determining total chloride content (TCC) is critical for mitigating the presence of 3-MCPDE in refined palm oil products. Thus, MPOB has modified the official method(ASTM D4929) analytical procedure and validated it to determine TCC in CPO and secondary oils derived from empty fruit bunch oil, palm press fibre oil, palm oil mill effluent, and sludge palm oil using a Total Chloride Analyzer (TCA). TCA consists of an automatic combination of oxidative combustion and coulo metric titration that is simple to use and can produce accurate data.

The oil palm industry is facing issues to enhance productivity in an era when fertile land is limited and most oil palm businesses rely on labour.

The palm oil industry has significantly contributed to the rapid economic development of the country. Malaysia produced more than 17.8 million tonnes of crude palm oil from a planted area of 5.87 million hectares in 2020. The country’s total export of palm oil and palm-based products was 25.2 million tonnes, generating export earnings of RM64.92 billion in 2020 (Parveez et al.,2020). Despite of the rapid growth, the oil palm industry is prone to the threat by various pests including insects, vertebrates, diseases and weeds.Thirty two diseases and disorders affecting the oil palm in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America are described with their distribution, economic importance, etiology and control (Kushairi et al.,2018). Of these, nine diseases are considered to be of major economic importance worldwide, 19 are of minor importance, and four are due to nutrient deficiencies. The major diseases causing serious economic losses vascular wilt (Fusariumoxysporum f. sp. elaeidis), Ganoderma basal stemrot (Ganoderma spp.) and Armillaria trunk rot(Armillariella mellea) in Africa; basal stem rot, Corticium leaf rot (Corticium solani). Marasmius bunch rot (Marasmius palmivora) in Southeast Asia; sudden wilt and bud rot in South America (Corleyand Tinker, 2015; Maizatul-Suriza et al., 2021).

Dietary fat is crucial in food formulation, in the current context on bakery products, from the aspects on structural properties (aeration and lightness) to rheological properties(fluidisation and plasticisation) and sensory attributes (crispiness, creaminess, odour, etc.)properties (Pareyt and Delcour, 2008). Palm oil and its fractions in particular, are widely used in bakery goods in view of its thermal stability and functionality. This could be explained by the proportional ratio between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (Mba et al., 2015). Red palm oil on this respect has better advantage as it possesses high carotenoid levels compared to palm oil. It also has assortment of health-promoting phytonutrients such as vitamin E, phytosterols, and co-enzyme Q10 (Loganathan et al., 2017). Carotenoids in red palm oil is highly bioavailable in human plasma, which explains the potential disease counteracting effect regardless of age (Loganathan et al., 2019). Red palm oil is effective as a source of pro-vitamin A in improving serum retinol concentrations in vitamin A deficient children, enhancing retinol level in maternal serum or breast milk, improving vision and conferring cardioprotective effects (Loganathan et al., 2017).

Malaysia has met local demand for poultry meat and has been self sufficient since 1984. However, the ruminant sub sector which is dominated by beef is not well developed. Due to this situation, Malaysia has been facing difficulties in having a sustainable and sufficient supply of red meat throughout the year.Ruminant production is limited by issues related to feeding supply. The current emphasis is on the development of practical and low-cost feeds for various classes of ruminant species. Low utilisation of fibre resources and lack of practical techniques to convert local feedstuffs to quality feeds are some of the limitations in the development of feed for local ruminant livestock.
