<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the main industrial crop in Malaysia. In the early years of its expansion, most of the oil palm was cultivated on suitable mineral soils. However, as available suitable land is diminishing, some of the oil palm is now being cultivated on marginal soils such as peat. There are 2.43 million hectares of peatland in Malaysia which are mostly located in Sarawak. Generally, peatland is formed in the lowlands, and only a small area occurs in the highlands. Lowland peat occurs in the coastal areas, in low lying and poorly drained depressions or basins.<br><br><strong>Main Researcher: Nordiana Abd Aziz</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The engine fuel filter blocking problem in vehicles running on biodiesel blends surfaced in 2007. Researchers discovered that this problem was due to the presence of steryl glucosides at very low level, less than 100 mg kg-1. In October 2008, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) incorporated a new parameter called the cold soak filtration test (CSFT) in the revised specification for biodiesel blend stock (B100) for middle distillate fuels (ASTM D6751-08). A CSFT time of 360 s and 200 s was set as the upper limit for both normal and low temperature conditions (at or below-12C), respectively.</p>

Although the use of agrochemicals increases productivity, it may also cause detrimental effects to the environment. Currently, many oil palm plantations have turned to implementing sustainable agricultural management practices to reduce the negative impacts to the palntations, environment and public. In a sustainable management system, microbial diversity under the oil palm environment can be used for studying biodiversity and soil health because microbes are the fastest living organisms to react to environmental changes. Beneficial microbes can be efficiently integrated into the management practices without sacrificing productivity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cream cheese occupies a relatively small but important place among the many varieties of cheeses available commercially. Cream cheese (also called soft cheese) is a sweet, soft, mild-tasting, white cheese, defined by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) as containing at least 33% milk fat with a moisture content of not more than 55% and a pH range of 4.4 to 4.9. A palm-based cream cheese analogue was produced as an alternative to natural cream cheese. Using the USDA specification as the guideline, palm-based products offers functional versatility to the cream cheese analogue. It can be flavored and colored according to the requirements of the user and the manufacturer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Red palm oil has an exceptionally high level of phytonutrients such as carotenes, tocotrienols and squalene. With the infusion of essential oils from chilies and other herbs, we are able to extend the nutritional benefits of the oil. We have demonstrated in our laboratory the antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti inflammation properties for some mixed phytonutrients. The infused red palm oil with spices and herbs will allow for more applications of the oil. The oil can be used in many culinary applications, e.g. as a condiment in the preparation of noodles, to marinate meat, to make sambal, curries and salads, and for light frying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shorstir is a palm-based chicken fat sabstitute formulated from palm fractions and other commercial dats. The ratio of its saturated, monousaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids is 4.8: 3.8 : 1. This ratio is similar to natural chicken fat. As an improvement, the oleic acid content of Shorstir is higher while the lauric acid content is lower than chicken fat. The melting profile of the fat substitute is also very similar to that of natural chicken fat, thus ensuring similar physical properties (Haighton, 1976). The processing condition is simple and cost-effective and therefore affordable to SME entrepreneurs (Lee and Singh, 1993; Miskandar et al., 2002).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Glyphosate herbicide is one of the major weed control products that are being used in oil palm plantations and in other major crop areas in Malaysia. The total volume of glyphosate marketed in Malaysia is estimated to be about 15 million liters, which is valued arounded RM250 million a year. In&nbsp;glyphosate formulations, an adjuvant is usually added or incorporated to enhance the&nbsp;effectiveness&nbsp;of the products. Adjuvants can be&nbsp;categorized&nbsp;into three groups, i.e., spray modifiers, activators&nbsp;and utility modifiers. Spray modifiers improve the wetting and spreading properties of a spray solution by lowering its surface tension. This type of adjuvant is&nbsp;probably&nbsp;more important for non-systemic chemicals that require more complete coverage for effectiveness. An activator adjuvant enhance foliar absorption of&nbsp;systemic chemicals, thus, increasing their biological activity. Utility modifiers, on the other hand, are antifoam agents, co-solvents, etc.</p>
